Calcium chloride tests: This test is also called the dome test. The dome test is used to measure the amount of moisture emitted from the surface of a concrete slab. It is performed by first grinding a 20in x 20in area, clearing the concrete of any impurities and contaminants. Then a calcium chloride dish is weighed and placed in the center of the grinded area. A plastic dome is then placed on top of the dish to simulate an airtight atmosphere. After a period of 60-72 hours, the dish is then cut out from the dome and weighed again. The weight gain will then formulate into actual pounds of moisture per 1000 square feet. For new construction, ASTM requires 3 tests for the first 1000 square feet and one test for each additional 1000 square feet. Alkalinity PH: This testing method is to determine surface PH levels where flooring is to be installed, coated, or applied. Prior to installing flooring products, the area should be free of alkaline salts and high levels of carbonation. ASTM F710 states that a PH test should be performed along with every moisture test.
